History

The Yawanawa (Yawanawá) are an Indigenous people of the Brazilian Amazon who traditionally live along the Gregório River in the state of Acre, Brazil. Their name is often translated as “People of the Wild Boar” (Yawa meaning wild boar and nawa meaning people). They belong to the Panoan linguistic family, a group of Indigenous nations whose cultures are deeply connected to the forests of western Amazonia.

For generations, the Yawanawa have preserved a rich spiritual tradition centered around relationship with the forest, ancestral wisdom, sacred plants, prayer, and song. Their ceremonial songs, known as huni meka, are considered a way of connecting with the spirit world, offering prayers, and carrying teachings passed down through generations.

Like many Indigenous peoples of the Amazon, the Yawanawa have a longstanding relationship with ayahuasca (uni), a sacred plant preparation used in ceremony for spiritual connection, prayer, healing, insight, and communication with the unseen world. Within Yawanawa tradition, ayahuasca is approached with deep reverence and is part of a broader system of knowledge that includes songs, dietas, plant teachings, and guidance from elders and spiritual leaders. The medicine is not viewed as separate from the forest, but as part of a living relationship with the natural world and ancestral wisdom.

The Yawanawa are also known worldwide for their powerful ceremonial singing, intricate body painting, feather adornments, and commitment to cultural preservation. In recent decades, Yawanawa women have become especially recognized for their leadership in revitalizing and sharing traditional songs and teachings.

The Yawanawa have endured significant challenges from colonization, exploitation of their lands, and outside pressures. Through cultural renewal and Indigenous leadership, they continue protecting their territory, language, traditions, and relationship with the forest.

Tivani Yawanawá

Tivani Yawanawá is a member of the Yawanawá people of the Brazilian Amazon, carrying forward the ancestral traditions of her lineage through sacred song, prayer, and ceremony. Like other Yawanawá spiritual representatives, she shares the teachings of her people through Saiti (traditional Yawanawá songs), which are considered more than music — they are prayers, connections with the spirit world, and ways of transmitting ancestral knowledge.

The Yawanawá tradition places deep importance on the relationship between humans, the forest, the ancestors, and the sacred medicine Uni (ayahuasca). Through ceremony, song, and spiritual practices, their communities preserve teachings that have been carried through generations. Tivani’s presence represents the continuation of this living lineage and the sharing of Yawanawá wisdom with respectful communities beyond the Amazon.

Known for her connection to medicine music and ceremonial expression, Tivani brings the vibrational power of the Yawanawá songs into circles around the world. Her voice carries the intention of remembrance, healing, gratitude, and connection with the natural world. The songs offered in ceremony are traditionally used to support prayer, invoke connection with the forest, and accompany spiritual journeys.
