What is Sweat Lodge?

A sweat lodge is a sacred, ceremonial space used by many Indigenous and earth-based traditions for purification, prayer, and spiritual renewal. It is typically a low, dome-shaped structure made from natural materials, symbolizing the womb of Mother Earth. Heated stones—often called “grandfathers”—are placed in a central pit, and water infused with prayers or herbs is poured over them to create steam.

During the ceremony, participants sit together in the darkness, guided by a ceremonial leader, as songs, drumming, prayer, and intentional silence are shared. The heat and steam encourage physical cleansing through sweat, while the ceremony itself supports emotional release, spiritual reflection, and communal connection. A sweat lodge is often used to mark transitions, set intentions, offer gratitude, or prepare for important rituals, helping participants release what no longer serves them and emerge grounded, clear, and renewed.

How do I prepare for Lodge?

Preparing for a sweat lodge is an important part of the ceremony itself, helping you arrive grounded, present, and respectful of the sacred space. It is recommended to eat a light, healthy lunch later in the day and avoid eating the three hours before ceremony. Focus on avoiding heavy meals so your body can move comfortably through the heat and cleansing process. Hydration is essential—drink at least 64 ounces of water throughout the day leading up to the lodge, and continue to sip water as needed to support your body before and after the ceremony.

Equally important is mental and spiritual preparation. Take time to come into mindfulness about your upcoming ceremony by setting intentions, offering prayers, journaling, or spending quiet time in nature. This inward focus helps you enter the lodge with clarity and purpose. Attire varies by tradition—some lodges are clothing optional, while others require coverage. When clothing is worn, choose light, breathable fabrics or a simple cover-up that allows you to remain comfortable in the heat. Preparing with care honors both your body and the sacredness of the lodge experience.

It is customary in many traditions to bring offerings as a gesture of gratitude and respect for the fire tender and the water pourer, who hold and guide the ceremonial space. Acceptable offerings may include herbs, tobacco, crystals, cash, or any heartfelt gift—what matters most is the intention behind it. No offering is ever required, and all are welcome regardless of whether they bring one. Participants are also invited to bring flowers for the altar, as well as small personal items to place there during the ceremony. These items will absorb and carry the energy, prayers, and intentions of the lodge, allowing you to take that energy with you to bring you power on your journey in this realm.
